Empowering Independence with the CFI Program

New Hampshire’s Consumer Directed Care for Independence (CFI) program allows eligible individuals to receive care at home from a trusted caregiver, often a family member or friend. Funded by New Hampshire Medicaid, the caregiver is paid for their time, with no cost to the person receiving care.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The Choices for Independence program is a Medicaid-funded home- and community-based services (HCBS) waiver designed to help adults with disabilities or long-term care needs live in their own homes and communities instead of a nursing home. It provides personal care services to people who need hands-on help with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, and eating, as well as home activities like cooking and cleaning.

  • Caregivers in New Hampshire are paid by the state through Medicaid. This means the person who receives care does not pay the caregiver. The current New Hampshire CFI caregiver pay at BURD Home Health is up to $20.00 per hour. All caregivers must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • No. The Choices for Independence program does not require caregivers have any special certifications.

  • No. Medicare alone does not meet the state’s requirements for this program. The person receiving care must have Medicaid and meet other state rules to qualify. If you have questions about your coverage, our team can help you review your options.

  • Medicare is a federal program for people who are 65 or older or have certain disabilities. Medicaid is for people with low incomes and is run by both the state and federal government, so rules can vary by state.

  • We offer services in more than 200 languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Hebrew, Hindi, French, Korean, Japanese, and Italian. To speak with an interpreter, call 833‑447‑4409.
