How To Receive WIC Nutrition Assistance Benefits?

Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children that you might know as WIC is a special benefits program focused on helping pregnant women, new mothers, and families of young children. The program provides free healthy food during pregnancy and early childhood.


You can apply as soon as you learn you are pregnant and can receive benefits if you are eligible. Find out if you could qualify for the WIC program, how to apply, and benefits you could receive.



Am I Eligible for WIC Benefits?

The program is designed to benefit pregnant women and mothers of young children up to the age of 5. You could be eligible if you:

  • are currently pregnant

  • are postpartum (up to 6 months after the ​end of a pregnancy​)

  • are currently breastfeeding (up to the infant’s first birthday)

  • have an infant

  • have children (under the age of 5)


If you already receive Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF benefits, you could already be eligible for WIC based on income limits. You still have to apply to receive the benefits.


If you are not enrolled in any of these programs, you will have to meet the income limits. Income limits depend on the household size and the state you reside in. You can find the income limits for your household and state on USDA website.



Benefits and Services Covered by WIC

It is commonly known to be a nutritional support program, but it gives you and your family access to education, breastfeeding support, community resources as well.


1 - Healthy Food and Nutrition Support

When enrolled in WIC, you get monthly deposits to an eWIC card that you can use like a debit card at grocery stores that accept WIC. It can be used to purchase pre-approved foods which is called food packages.


The food packages are personalized based on your nutritional needs. The food packages range includes food items like fruits, vegetables, dairy products, whole grains and products, plant-based proteins, and infant formula and baby food.


Note: If you have an EBT card and get SNAP benefits, the WIC card deposits will be different from it.


2 - Breastfeeding Support

Breastfeeding can come with common problems for new mothers and navigating it alone can make it even more difficult. WIC provides resources for any stage in the breastfeeding journey.


Whether you are preparing, starting, or facing challenges, you can access resources including:

  • free breast pumps

  • breastfeeding assessment

  • education and counselling

  • access to lactation specialists and trained WIC staff support


You can also support other mothers, if you have been successful in your breastfeeding journey, you can give back to the community and provide support to other mothers.


3 - Free Nutrition Assessments

As part of your applications, you receive a free health and wellness check by trained WIC staff. The results help professionals personalize the food package based on the nutritional needs of you and your family.


4 - Nutrition Education and Community Resources

You could be navigating nutritional needs during pregnancy or while taking care of your child/ren, WIC provides tailored support in this journey. You can get 1:1 counselling session with nutrition professional and trained staff to receive shopping advice for your family needs, meal planning, help with food allergies or dietary needs.


Beyond professional advice, WIC connects you with community-based organizations that give you access to medical and mental health care services.



How To Apply for WIC?

Start applying as soon as you know that you are pregnant. Do not assume that you won't qualify, you should apply and check.


Step 1 - Check Eligibility

You can use the WIC Eligibility Tool to find out if you could qualify for the program or not based on basic information. The tool does not ask for any identifying information so you can use it to find the next steps you can take or why you will not be eligible.


Step 2 - Find WIC agency

You will have to find a local or closest WIC agency to start your application in person or online. When you find a WIC agency, you will book an appointment for application, document verifications.


Step 4 - Meet with WIC staff

Your WIC office will inform you the documents you need to carry for your WIC appointment. Depending on your office, the document could be uploaded online, the appointment could be on phone too.


After your appointment, you will hear back from the WIC office if you qualify or not. If you qualified, you would start receiving your benefits instantly.



Keeping Up with Your WIC Benefits

Make sure you use the benefits since they expire at the end of the month that they are for. If you do not use them, they will disappear at midnight on the last day of the month. Your enrollment in the WIC program also expires after a few months so you need to renew them before the eligibility period ends. Keep your WIC office up to date with your contact information and any address changes.
